My camera records videos in .mov to playback with quicktime. The only way I can figure out to edit videos is to buy the premium version of Quicktime. Is there a program I can download for free that I can use to edit videos? Or can I change the format that my camera records in?

If you're just doing basic edits like cutting stuff out VirtualDub works ok but only on AVI files out of the "box". Pasting together videos from different sources gets a lot more complicated. There are modified versions of VirtualDub for MPEG files as well as various plug-ins for MPEG and WMV files.

You can convert Quicktime files to AVI with MOV 2 AVI (freeware):

I haven't tried any other freeware editors.
