Coal Slag?

I went to my local vendor where I always purchased my sand blasting sand, well not anymore... they no longer carry any silica or quartz based products, now all they have is "black beauty" blasting media

it is coal slag, which at first thought would be ewwwwwwwwww (i had a coal fired furnace once upon a time) but on second thought... it might just work, it would seem like it should be inert

anyone have any experience with it?

basically just curious at this point

TIA,
Av

I know people have used it for aquatic plant substrate. The edges are sharp is what I remember most of all, sharp if you are a bottom feeding catfish that is.

Aquatic plants like a buttload of nutrients so I can't say if that stuff is inert or not.
