cedar mulch?

i heard that cedar mulch could be used for sarr's

tring to get some sphag, but no luck. and i have tons of cedar mulch.

should i use this?

I have used cypress and pine mulch with decent results. I have not tried cedar.

Cedar mulch is NOT good for sarrs. Spagnum IS NOT necessary either, so stick with Canadian Sphagnum peat moss. Pine needles can be added to the mix for their acid content, but 90% Peat moss works well.

oooops!!

i meant cypress..got them for nepenthes at - - - - - and looked it again
and it says cypress..getting comfused wirh cedar and cypress

and im surprised that pine is acidic..

but i still doubt that this is cedar...how do you tell the difference between them?

Cedar has a very heavily aromatic smell. VERY strong! Used in cedar chests, and furniture. The mulch may have this pungent oil in it, and may kill CP.

hmmmm...i used it for my neps and didn't die, and doesn't smell that special..
so i guess it's cypress?

Okay, a friend of mine said he got some cuttings last year labeled as Nepenthes. So he planted in typical Nepenthes mix with plenty of orchid bark. Turns out they were Sarracenia. He said they didn't die, but didn't grow as fast as the other Sarracenia divisions he planted at the same time in typical CP mix (sand/perlite : peat).
