Argiope aurantia - yellow garden spider

I found one of these on a rhododendron yesterday. Though it's apparently common, I've never seen one before and it is easily the largest spider I've found here in Oregon with a body about an inch long. The vast majority of web-weaving spiders I see here are I believe Araneus diadematus - the cross orbweaver.

Used to see some big ones of these in Florida. Pretty spiders. Also used to see a lot of Nephila clavipes.

Those are like a plague here in Texas. Every summer they're EVERYWHERE and their webs get massive. I once watched a red wasp attack and kill one and drag it away into a hole under the deck. Spiders body was easily 4" long
