NASC auction is OPEN!!

Advice please on Nepenthes hamata

It is not a rare plant by any means, but it is not sold around every corner. It typically costs a significantly greater amount of money than a lot of other Nepenthes if you were to purchase it. Otherwise, you might get lucky or be able to trade for it on the forums. That picture is one of our members: elgecko. Actually, a cutting of that plant was available during the NASC auction.

Hi all

I must say I like this Nepenthes hamata which is shown here
http://www.freewebs.com/cool85k5/Nepenthes/Nhamata_1_22_05.jpg
I put the link due to copy right bla bla bla

But now you know the type I am looking at, how easy and how to obtain such a plant as I have not seen these in the local garden center....

All advise welcome ...

As I like the unusal things ... and this looks rather exotic....

Many thanks Noddy

Nepenthes hamata are more or less readily available, either through tissue culture (typically from Wistuba in Germany) or, more rarely and expensively, through seeds or cuttings from private growers and the occasional nursery. If you can provide cool nights and reasonable humidity for the young plants, you'd be good to go . . .

A good link for its specific cultivation, especially for the novice grower is:

the others have said how to obtain one, i will add also that other than being touchy bout low humidity when young, its a pretty easy and straight forward plant to grow....actually grows fairly fast when it puts on some size.....

i'd say that hamata is much tougher than expected when it comes to temperature and humidity. Mine is about the size of a one dollar coin and has survied humidity of 20% and night temperatures of 70.

Hamata seems to be very easy contrary to popular belief, I have 2 currently, both small, one is wistuba clone 3, and the other is a seedgrown from BE. The seedgrown seems slightly more vigorous. They are not a hard plant, and many people grow them as a windowsill plant.
