A tuber's eye?

I guess I need clarification on this subject. I made the assumption that the "divet" in the tuber was the eye. Is this correct?
The divet, or eye, goes face up when planting.. so I've been planting mine divet up. Have I done everything properly?

So I really need to take pics of the Albany Hwy. The growth that has broke the surface looks a LOT like flower stalk. But.. where's the dew!?!?

This thread on CPUK should help. According to the other Travis (Pyro) that structure is an "ascending stolon" from the "eye" which will eventually differentiate to the stem and leaves.

So here's the growth I am seeing from my D. erythrorhiza ssp. squamosa (Albany Hwy).

It would appear that this subspecies when mature will put the flower stalk out first so the structure below are probably leaves.

Sometimes it can be very difficult to find the "eye". As Joe said you can wait until the stolon growth appears before planting. Even if you don't get the "eye" upright the stolon and roots will grow in the right direction as witnessed in the photos on CPUK where the stolon zig-zags because the tuber has been moved around while the stolon was growing. You shouldn't have to dig up the tubers again for several years until you need to repot or try to find additional tubers.
