The "youth vote"

So what happened?
why didnt the college kids turn out in droves?
I have a theory..
I think its because they were too smart to be told what they are supposed to think by a bunch of idiot celebrities and rock stars..
I consider the lack of turnout by the 20-somethings to be a good sign..they couldnt vote for bush, on principle.
but they didnt buy the hollywood/Kerry propaganda aimed at them either.
they refused to be brainwashed, because they are smarter than that..
so they didnt bother to vote at all..
thoughts?

dont know.....i know there was a near record voter turnout in my state i have been wondering what its been like elsewhere. Scotty, i THINK you may have nailed it atleast i hope so as to me it makes the most sence and would mean college students were not brainwashed. BTW i noticed something in the numbers, there is about a 4 million vote difference between the two.....number of current NRA members:4.3 million i really wonder if this will make future candidates FINALLY figure out that an anti-gun stance is poor policy.

why do people keep making threads about the same thing? just post it in one of the other 100000 threads about this.

I havent seen this specific topic discussed anywhere else.

Check your stats, man. Is it the college kids who didn't vote or the non-college youths??? and what are you trying to do with this thread anyhow, insult college kids, the young, what?? I'm getting pretty sick of these political threads too, there really shouldn't be any more of these. See you in the REAL threads.

I dont know the GOP has a impressive 8 million new voters

The result of thid political year is youngs on both sided bitterly angry at the opposing party

If you dont like them, stay out of them..just STOP READING!
problem solved for all of us..

actually, It was pretty obvious I was commending the college kids.
but you probably couldnt tell that by statements such as "they were too smart to be told what they are supposed to think"
and
"they refused to be brainwashed, because they are smarter than that.."
I can see where you might have been confused..
those statements could easily be interpreted as insults.

Im just talking about the VERY low voter turnout by the 20-something crowd..
we kept hearing how the Youth of America was so fired up and so gung-ho for the cause..
yet when the time came..nothing!
why not?
thats what im interested in..
(I guess it would be both college and non-college educated kids..this group:

We have two colleges here.  I can not tell you what stopped most from voting.  I can tell you that from the ones I spoke with - two things.

one group - not enough time to keep up with the issues.
other group - they did not care who wins, there's a big party tonight.

I think group one is okay. They did not want to make an un-informed choice.  Group two I deal with all to often.

I should also add that I did see more youth voting than I have before.

ok ok Ive stated before there will be no insults in the other threads guess I didnt realize I had to specify on ALL THE FORUM THREADS.
Play nicely please or Ill be forced to put you in corners and take away your toys

probably two main reasons: apathy and laziness

certainly not what Scot and the Republicans would have you believe

Could we please stop taking stabs at each other. It appears that there is no form of politics that can be discussed on this forum. I am out.

It's just good-natured fun.
Like arguing over the best football team - there is no right answer.  And you tend to argue for your favorite team, regardless of their record. Unless you're a Dolphins or Bears fan.

Scotty, you have some funny ideas about reality.

The college-age voters picked Kerry by about 55% to 40%. That they didn't turn out in extremely high numbers should not be construed by Bush/Halliburton or Republicans as an sign of intelligence.

hmm..well thats more depressing than my theory then..
so its a sign of unintelligence?
or apathy/lazyness?
at least I was giving them some credit for being intelligent..

They're just college students: overworked, overpartied, and a bit lazy and apathetic. They still turned out in decent numbers, just not that high a number.

And they got it right, too.

that's why they're called generation Y, I believe. As in why me? I was in college (undergrad and grad) for 3 elections. Only voted in 1, the first, and that was because a lot of people from the dorm were going. The second election I was pretty green, if you know what I mean, and was definitely lazy/apathetic at that time. In 2000 I was in bed with a 104 fever, and was definitely temporarily apathetic at that time.

To quote the title of one of Jim Hightower's books, "If the Gods Had Meant Us to Vote, They'd Have Given Us Candidates." Kerry would be on the conservative side of most countries' conservative parties. A bush and a bush-lite don't make for an inspirational selection.

Here's a paraphrase from some comedian. Sorry, can't remember who:

Isn't it funny you get to pick between 2 people for president of the United States, while you pick from 50 people for Miss America.

Scott: Do you know the first rule of the forums? Be nice. If you can't do this, then don't post.

Did anyone ever think of the fact that there really wasn't two differnt choices, only one party with 2 varients. I myself am a college student, who did vote, but like many people my age i did not really identify with either party, nor did i truely like either canidate, just hated one less than the other. We have only one choice in this country, a political party that is focused on big bussiness and getting re-elected, there is no viable third party who can reach out to those of us who do not support big bussiness, and i know all of you democrats are going to say that you dont support big bussiness, but if you put democrats on a continum from total socialism to total capitals you are still quite close to total capitalism, and in that case not that far from republicans.

So if you want know why alot of young people did not vote, i thinkthe lack of a real choice is one of the main reasons.
