Signatures / avatars

OK Guys,

signatures have been getting out of control, we love your photos and what not, but keep them small.

The mods and I are talking about sizes and what not, and we will be coming forth with a standard soon... we may remove graphics from signatures all together.

On the same note, I am thinking about re-instituting Custom Avatars, as a way for you to express your creative pleasures. However, Copyrighted use of logos and inapropriate material will result in an instant yank of your avatar, and depending on what it is, maybe a insta-ban. (Read porn or other disgusting violent or degrading material.)

I want your feedback, the Mods and I have the final decision on this, as it is one more thing to police... but I want you to let me know what you think.

Oh, and for now, all you guys with big honkin pictures out there, MAKE THEM SMALLER! (Use good judgement for now, if in doubt, ask others, even me or a mod.)

You may have a PM or e-mail about your sig file from a admin, if you do, don't argue please, just change. Just because you don't have a PM or e-mail, doesn't mean your good...

general rule of thumb, if your signature takes up to half of a normal posts length, or more (some of you have pictures as big as a post in itself&#33
wink.gif
then your out of bounds... the requirements we come up with will be even less.

Here is another way to tell if your signature is to long... if your actively posting in a topic and you have to scroll down to the bottom past twenty big pictures in your signature file, and your finger is getting tired... you need to tone it down..

Thanks all!

Good idea. I especially like the idea about appropriate avatars.

Ram,

ok my input. the custom avatar is a cool idea. for pictures of yourself (like josh used to have posted of himself). like he said before lets see what everyone else looks like or a picture of a plant. yes it will have to be small in size.
also i was thinking of a PM that could be sent to more than one person at a time. like an e-mail being sent to a couple people at once.
well that is all of the bright ideas that i can think of right now.

Remember size in terms of both physical dimensions and file bytes.

Hi,

turning off Signatures and Avatars in 'Your Control Panel' is another way to get rid of this problem...

Limit the size to 160x160 with a file size of no more than 10K.

I'd love to have a custom Avatar... I have something perfect in mind. ^_^

Joachim, I don't consider some members having to sacrifice a feature as a viable solution to people that simply have to much junk in the trunk.

Nick, I agree to keep it small, I am thinking even smaller however... I am not dead set on it, 32 x 32 is the size I am thinking, which if memory serves, is the size of the current avatars.

160 X 160 can still look large on a desktop running 640 X 480, even 800 x 600... one of the reasons I was slow to pick up on this, is I am a geek with good vision, I run my desktop at 1600 x 1200, so I don't notice things being to big right off hand. Maybe a few others don't either.

I think size 100 x 100 for custom aviators is good, that's what I usually see on fish & herp forums.

Hi Ram,

this was a zynical comment from my side. Your request sounds very amusing to me, when not even the moderators are able to handle this feature in a sensible way. Animated gifs may not be big in visual size, but they take a long time to load over my slow connection and need nearly all the cpu-power of my old Sun-workstation.
