My VFTs are enjoying the outside sunlight so much that I am wondering whether my plans for a plexiglass top on my terrarium is not a mistake.

Any light-filtering probs with run-of-the-mill plexiglas? Do the plants need the UV that it almost certainly reduces?

I can mount the lights within the enclosure, or put in cutouts for them, if I need to. (I may do this anyway--I have this idea that I can hide the lights effectively by using a reflective border around the top edge of the tank, and on the bottom side of the plexiglass top.)

If you are not having problems growing them in your current conditions, I wouldn't change a thing.

And if they are outside, you want to be careful about closing them off. VFT's need air flow and they will start to rot if they don't get it.

Leaving a top off is the best thing to do.

If you do put something on top and add lights, try to open it up somewhere else.

Also, keep them enclosed will raise the temperature and the soil temp. ( not the temp around it ) cannot get above 86-88 degrees, If it does, the roots will be damaged by the heat. You will notice it in about a week.

It's a product of Röhm (Germany)
look at their website for technical data

btw,</a> they offer a newly developed ALLTOP plexiglas with light transmission of 92 % (inclusive UV !!!!!). Ideal for greenhouses but very expensive :-(

I read about that--of course, even if it were cheap, the local Lowe's Hardware Warehouse of Doom wouldn't carry it. They will have 75 varieties of floor wax, though.

I used to shop at a local hardware store, where I could get anything I wanted, delivered with a smile. Now I have no choice--but I can have the World's Biggest Kettle Grill if I want it. *That's* progress!
