Are pitcher plants perrenials or annuals? What are they if neither?

Perrenials. Many can live for decades.

Hi Papichulo

As Cp2k said, they are perennials. They grow their pitchers off of rhizomes (sort of like a long semi-exposed root). They do have a winter dormancy where the pitcher growth will stop and existing pitchers may brown off and die. This may give the impression that the plant is dying but its a natural part of their cycle. In the spring, growth will begin again and they will produce fresh new pitchers. I normally cut off any dead growth but leave any pitchers or parts that remain green (for photosynthesis).

welcome to the forums!

most people think of rhizomes as bulbs, they are pretty much the same thing; ie they go dormant just like regular bulbs, only they dont grow like a bulb. you really need a book with a detailed picture to understand how the rhizomes grow... the tip of the rizhome keeps growing as the back keeps dieing off... if you keep a sarracenia in a pot for several years, and pot the plant in the middle of the pot, the plant will end up on the side of the pot! The way this bulb grows, it pretty much never dies. i wouldn't be surprised if these guys could live over 50 years! If this does not make sense remember its late here and i'm very tired...

A good place to get your first sarracenia would be here, from petflytrap.

Actually, rhizomes are not the same as 'bulbs', but are stems which can branch. The only difference to actual stems is they are either at the the soil surface or just below it.

there perrenials but some people have mistaken them for annuals because some unexperianced people who don't care for these plant correctly end up having a dead plant which make them think they are annuals .

...Or just think they are dead when they enter dormancy, and just throw them away
