That's nice. They guy who sells orchids at the Farmer's Market gave me a tip, when the flowers are all but done, clip them off at the second node, and with this species you're likely to get another flower stalk.
Thanks for the kind comments everyone! Currently another flower has opened...this is certainly a prize Phalenopsis in my collection!
Tim, I have heard the same thing and supposedly if you cut it there, you will get another spike sometime and/or on the old cut spike, sometimes baby plantlets will form asexually on it sorta like a Drosera prolifera or a VFT flower.
Dustin,
i have tried that on the same phal. that you have pictured well the flower looks the same from looking back at some pictures i took of it but, anyway i did cut it at the second nod and right now it is begining to grow something from where i cut the spike at. it is still to early to tell what it is or going to be right now but, it does grow something from cutting it at the 2-4 nod of the spike.
when it does finish up grow i'll let ya know what came from it.
My only Phal is sending up its first real flower spike as we speak. I say real because when I bought it, it was flowerless with an old spike. I trimmed the old spike and sure enough it started to send up another spike from under the cut. It's a slow grower though. The new spike seems to be overtaking it.
The cool thing is I have no idea what the flower looks like.
I've got a phal with a keikei growing on the fourth node (where it is cut just above), and a new spike coming from the third. My other phal has a second spike coming from an old spike, and a brand new one just started growing out of the bottom.
