Coal mining is bad news. It's nasty when done from above and treacherous when done from below.
The solution to most environmental problems is to use less energy. Run fans instead of air conditioners and sweat a little. Keep the place on the cold side in the winter and wear a sweater. Stay out of the car as much as possible. Long term things involve choosing to live and work where your own feet can get you around or you can take a bus. Without lots of people making changes like that, mountaintop removal and nuclear power plants and energy wars might be the least of our problems.
