coco quire

Any thoughts on the use of coco quire(sp) the stuff made out of coconut husk. It looks a lot like peat. I purchased some for starting some orchid deflaskings. I have transfered one regular into it for testing. Its suposed to hold lots of water. I know it can have salt in it if the quality isnt very good. The stuff I purchased was for hydroponics.

I've used coco fiber (coconut husk fibers) in a few of my nep mixes and it's great, but your stuff sounds like it has much finer consistency (i.e., you said it looks like peat). Never used it for VFTs, though.

It's hydroponics grade so you you don't have to worry about salts, but a quick rinse wouldn't hurt. It's the stuff bought from petstores (reptile bedding) that can be full of minerals.
