bromeliads

OK just recieved a bunch from an order. I thought that they grow in standard dirt but the roots are wrapped in LFS and appears to be what they were growing in. So, do they want dirt or LFS?

Joe

OK found my shipping list, here is what I could use some help with,

Cryptanthus
Neoregelia

Other plants I could use help with that aren't broms

Monstera Dubia
Selaginella uncinata
Rhipsalis

Thanks for any info
joe

I'm not sure what you mean by 'dirt'

If you mean a mixture of peat moss and sand then the answer would be both are suitable. If you are referring to garden soil etc then I think LFS would be better. Most bromeliads don't have large roots and  the Neoregelia survives mainly from the water in the tank reservoir. Cryptanthus don't have a tank of water but can still survive in LFS.
These links show two cryptanthus - one is in LFS in a pot, the other is mounted in LFS on a treefern slab.

The other link is to a photo of my Neoregelia (fireball) which I have also repotted in LFS only.

Good luck and happy growing, Neil.

Thanks, I had no idea the earth stars got so large.

Side note, that Nepenthes you have hanging next to the dark earth star looks Identical to to the monster in my greenhouse, what species is it?

The name tag said Nepenthes 'gentle'. Not much help eh?
I'm assuming it is a N. maxima hybrid but could be wrong.
Neil

That sounds about right, mine didn't have a tag but I assumed it to by the same type of hybrid, I just can't figure out what the other parent is.
