    Sarracenia: Before and After photos

I haven't posted here in a while, but I just decided to show some Before & After shots of some of my plants over the last 3 months. S. purpurea BEFORE (May 2006): These were slow to start off this year because there was A LOT more cloudy and rainy days than usual this spring (Bay Area...

    Hungry, Hungry Hybrid

This is kind of random but I was just wondering... Has anyone ever had a tendril go into an open pitcher and have the new pitcher develop inside the old one? Years ago I had a tendril inside a small pitcher from a basal shoot of a ventricosa, and I was always curious to see what would happen if...

    Does Misting Help

Keeping the humidity high for VFT is overrated, they aren't tropical plants. They should be getting as much light as possible. Besides, if they are getting a lot of sun, the water you mist would evaporate in a few minutes anyway. That was where I went wrong when I first started growing VFT...

    Nepenthes x 'Judith Finn'

I always thought 'Judith Finn' was a cultivar... but Savage Garden describes it like it's the name for all hybrids between N. veitchii × N. spathulata.

    S. purpurea

Nice plant. I really like the ruffles the lid of the pitchers.

    D. capensis, indoors or outdoors?

Like jimscott said, a south or west window would be better if you have one available, but I wouldn't worry too much if that east window is the best you can do. My cape sundews grew on an east window last year in my old house. I had no bright south or west windows because they all faced a covered...

    D. capensis, indoors or outdoors?

hey lee1dew, I am also in the Bay Area. I put my cape sundews outside about 3 weeks ago and mine seem to be okay. Inside my house was always in the upper 60's to 70's, and they seem have not been affected even when it gets to the 40's at night outdoors. I suggest moving it back inside and grow...

    odd growth on veitchii cutting

The dried pitchers are still in good shape. The peristomes look like gold on my screen.

    Growing outside

hey trainspotting, I'm in Concord, so i'm in the city right next to yours! I haven't tried Nepenthes outdoors without humidity control yet, but I did have an outdoor terrarium that N. ventricosa and ventrata grew in. Let me know how the CP for sale at Cal Botanical Gardens are. I havent been...

    Drosera Capensis: 15 days later

For these, I used about 50/50 peat and sand. The surface looks like pure peat in the pictures because I put a layer of pure peat on top. I don't like having to look at sand/perlite/bark on any of my plants, so I always cover it up with peat or LF Sphagnum. Random Note: I used Scott's brand peat...

    Drosera Capensis: 15 days later

Update... 3/24/06 - Two weeks ago, still indoors: TODAY 4/7/06 - I moved them outside a few days ago, allowing them to catch hundreds of tiny insects. I counted 24 flower stems emerging: Here's a close-up shot of a leaf since it's hard to see the insects from the picture above. They...

    Check this out

A video is a great idea. Can't wait to see how much your plants change during the summer when they're fully awake. I think your Nepenthes alata is is actually ventrata [ventricosa x alata], but it's difficult for me to tell on the monitor i'm using right now (maximum brightness is dark)...

    D. capensis leaf cutting pic

I tried capensis leaf cuttings about 5 years ago. I was told to keep as much of the bottom of the leaf touching the surface as you can by partially burying them (but still be able to see the surface of the leaf). I got 18 plantlets from just two leaves.

    S. rosea?

    S. rosea is/was also known as S. purpurea subsp. venosa var. burkii (or is it burkei?) This is what I was told 4 year ago: "They [rosea] get bigger, much redder, hairier and have pink flowers.  Very pretty plants I think.  Otherwise, they are just the same as venosa." I also heard the flowers...
