Thanks for the complements. The veitchii and raff grow inside in terrariums with the truncata, medusa, ampullaria , and northiana. The others are outside on my porch. I live near Torrance. I can't claim credit for the Peristeria because I bought it in spike.

Mine took temps down around 37 degrees last winter with day time temps in the fifties and grew fine, though I couldn't really tell if it slowed down or not. I think cold weather and wet potting medium will rot the roots unless the mix is well aerated, so keep it on the dry-ish side if it gets...
Very nice pics. What is that nep in the first pic on the left with the roundish leaves and long green pitchers? Is the orchid a lycaste or stanhopea relative?
The avian flu doesn't really scare me that much either. If you read Richard Preston's The Hot Zone, no diseases seem worse than Ebola and Marburg. If Ebola Reston mutates into something that kills humans, we're in for a lot of trouble because Ebola Reston can spread through the air unlike the...
I think Neps Around The House has grown N. macrophylla outside in Southern CA for at least three years, so they are probably fairly tolerant of low humidity. I know from personal experiance that it gets extremely dry here in the summer, but we do get fog and bigs drops in temperature at night.
What's scary is that if the quake was bigger (I mean A LOT bigger) it might have caused a tsunami. Then we would have been screwed if it was a big one because I think only two coastal CA cities are ready for a tsunami.
Mine is also slow at growing and making pitchers. Mine suffered mite damaged and stopped growing, but now it is starting to pitcher again. I find that if I move the developing pitcher buds they don't grow and just dry up. The leaves are very stiff, and the tendrils seem to be very long compared...
I like the color of your N. spath x spec. I think the color of mine resembles a spectabilis more than an intermediate form between the two species. The N. lowii x ventricosa is around 6 months old i think. The pitcher size has almost doubled since I got it.
