Esteemed Colleagues, Uploaded lots of new photos for June. Now that the weather is warmer and the fertilizer is kicking in, the Nepenthes are really taking off. Hope you all enjoy. Here's the usual link to the homepage. Scroll down to the photo link. http://www.nepenthesaroundthehouse.com...

    Choices - Outside or Inside

Well, since the sun rises in the east and sets in the west with the south receiving the most sun, I find it unusual that the north side of your house receives the most light. But if that's the brightest spot, then so be it. J

    Choices - Outside or Inside

Don't grow on the north side. That gets the least amount of light. East will get morning light, south will get the noon light and west will get the afternoon light. I grow my smaller plants on plastic tables under shadecloth until they get bigger and then go full sun. That's me though in my...

    Choices - Outside or Inside

When adapting Neps to outdoor conditions it is very common to get some leaf bleaching in direct sunlight. In this quote: Last year I had two of them outside and occasionally they seemed to just get burnt or get little red spots on the leaves (the sanguinea got the spots, not the ventricosa)...

    A few photos for May

San Francisco area should be fine most of the year except for winter times. It may get a little colder there than in Southern California. But you are near the coast so that may help a bit. I would imagine that the plants I'm having success with you should as well. Typical highland temperatures...

    A few photos for May

Thanks Victoria. I think I'll have much better stuff in a month or so. As long as the weather stays pretty predictable, the plants should be alright. J

    A few photos for May

Hey All, Posted a few new photos of some plants for May. I can't say enough so far about the improvement using a seaweed based fertilizer at about 1/2 to 1/3 strength. Lots of growth and new pitchers for my abused Neps outdoors. That stuff is working wonders. Even the weeds love it!! Here's...

Some of my neps, new dragons and sabre dialup beware

You're going to love the Sabre when that thing starts growing out. Trust me on that one. The uppers should be quite stunning. Joel

    possiblity of growing these plant

They do fine in tyical highland temperatures. Are you close to the ocean? I think NC gets more humid than where I am. Definitely colder! I would think that you could grow those guys outdoors from spring to early fall and then move them indoors to a sunny window location during the winter months...

a few new photos for April

Hey All, Haven't been by in a while and I'm doing some updating to the site http://www.nepenthesaroundthehouse.com. A few new photos with more to come since the weather is warming up. I should be getting some nice pitchers in about another month or so. Joel

    Nepenthes dubia/inermis

Both plants do well as typical highlanders. Dubia seems to grow slowly for me compared to inermis that grows a little faster. My dubias are still small and haven't produced any uppers. My inermis is vining and has produced a few uppers. So for me I would say dubia is the more difficult to grow...

    fusca and spectabilis

I don't grow spectabilis and fusca as windowsill plants but i do grow them outdoors and they do fine in my temperate climate. I think the trick to growing Neps as windowsill plants is adequate air movement. Plants tend to get too wet and can rot out. There's balancing all the factors of light...

Baby Hamata outside in full sun

I've found that hamata likes shadier conditions outdoors. I've grown some smaller guys into larger plants outdoors with some success. I have a small hairy hamata under shade cloth outdoors and it's doing fine. I believe it will grow more slowly compared to other growers growing hamata in optimal...

    Nepenthes windowsill growers - assemble!

Trash, I wouldn't expect any new pitchers for a while. When I get my plants and put them indoors or worse, outdoors with the lowered humidity the pitchers often dry up and die. You can tell by looking at the leaves of the plants when they arrive. In higher humidity like in greenhouses the...
