    Darlingtonia!

Here's a shot I took of my potted Darlingtonia a couple days ago. This one grows outside in full sun, all day, every day, even in the middle of summer. How do I deal with the roots overheating? Well, I don't. The roots get hot - just went and stuck my finger down into the soil and it felt...

    Darlingtonia!

The "mutant" leaves are just juvenile pitchers, typical on seedlings and stolon offshoots. Here are a few shots of Darlingtonia in the wild in the Sierra Nevada: EDIT: And one more of yours truly at a small Darlingtonia seep in Del Norte County, CA.

Repotting all my Sarracenia (hopefully doing it right this time)

Thanks Djoni! I still have one more S. minor Okee Giant and one regular S. minor, so I want to see if I can get those back to health before I even think about adding another, hahaha.

Repotting all my Sarracenia (hopefully doing it right this time)

Also, this time around I did put a layer of black lava rock at the bottom of the pots to hopefully improve drainage.

Repotting all my Sarracenia (hopefully doing it right this time)

The sand I used to repot my plants the first time was pretty course. Water drained through it very quickly when I first repotted the plants, but after a couple months it all started going downhill as the organic constituents rotted. Here's a shot of some of the soil as it looked when I unpotted...

Repotting all my Sarracenia (hopefully doing it right this time)

Wire Man - Thanks! Traditionally I never considered myself a fan of Heliamphora, mainly because I just don't want to have to baby a plant just to get it to survive, but seeing how BigBella grows his outdoors in San Francisco, I had to give it a try myself with the hardiest variety there is. I...

Repotting all my Sarracenia (hopefully doing it right this time)

Earlier this year when I was living in Mississippi I posted about my pitcher plants not thriving like they should have been, and eventually I figured out the cause... It was because the soil I used had waaaaaaay to much LFS in it (I think I used LFS, peat, and sand in a 1:1:1 ratio), and over...

Winter herps! A couple Painted Ensatinas from my front yard

Thanks again everyone! Peatmoss - if you can find springs that flow year-round, that can be a good place to find herps like plethodontid salamanders even in the winter. I've seen it done in Pennsylvania, which I know is a lot farther south than Ontario, but it might be worth a look. You do have...

Stacked macro photograph of a fruit fly

Fantastic shot, Ernie. Do you ever contribute your images to BugGuide.net? Having photographs of key features used in the identification of insects to the species level (when possible) is incredibly useful on there, especially among the dipterans where the difference between two species can be...

Winter herps! A couple Painted Ensatinas from my front yard

Thanks guys! Ron - Both of these salamanders were under a plastic sheet in the front yard, I think it's to keep weeds from growing or something. But it makes good salamander homes as well! Cthulhu138 - Yep, similar story here. With chytridiomycosis wiping out entire populations of endangered...

    updated snake pics

Very nice corn collection! The tequila sunrise anery is probably my favorite because it looks like an alterna: http://calphotos.berkeley.edu/imgs/512x768/0000_0000/0210/2056.jpeg

Our Bearded Dragon eats better than we do...

Beautiful dragon! I have noticed that much like with humans, the older beardies get, the better they are at eating their veggies.

First seeds! S. alata "black tube" x S. flava rubricorpora

Yeah if they look anything like the ones linked to, I'll be stoked. An awesome combination I can think of would be the dark purple of the alata combined with the yellow lip and interior of the rubricorpora, but given that I only have 25 seeds, that combination's probably unlikely to pop up!

Got a wee bit o' snow last night ...

Beautiful shots! Here is a shot I snapped in Mendocino County, CA while I was driving home for the holidays (snow is rare in this area, I was excited).
