Worth it getting a Terrarium for pings?

I ended up just going with 100% MVP Turface, and im going to top water when it looks about dry. I figure this will prevent crown rot. Hopefully this substrate is as good as people say! lol

Has anyone found a good "Coarse" silica sand?

There are tons of aquarium sands, although a lot don't really seem to display an exact set of ingredients. I wonder if any of them would be suitable. Since it seems like from a lot of tests (If you look at the flytrap forums website) that a lot of the sands (Such as quikrete) will continue to...

Quick question on Substrates before I assemble them!

Yeah your probably right, the only thing im really debating now is adding in some sort of calcerous mineral to the mix (IE: Crushed coral shells for example).....most people don't seem to have it in the mix however (Although I wonder if the pings get nutrient starved in that case). Seems this...

Quick question on Substrates before I assemble them!

So i've searched this site's threads and many google sites to try and come to a clear consensus on substrates, it doesn't seem there is on (Which is ok! there probably will never be ha!). So this isn't exactly a question about "What substrate should I use", since there are tons of topics devoted...

Worth it getting a Terrarium for pings?

Oh I see, With Top Watering your just saying Top Water until the soil looks moist enough, but not actually keeping a "specific" amount in the tray. Gotcha.... That seems actually "safer" to me (Less risk of rot) although with 100% mineral based media i'd wonder how easy it would be to tell how...

Has anyone found a good "Coarse" silica sand?

Awesome, I have no doubt MVP mix by itself works, but just for looks i'd sorta like to mix it up. None of these should really "break down" from what I mentioned I would think. Thats one reason why im avoiding vermiculite (since apparently it DOES breakdown relatively quickly). An all mineral mix...

Has anyone found a good "Coarse" silica sand?

There shouldn't be any harm in Mixing the APS w/other stuff in equal amounts i'd assume then? IE: Perilite/Pumice/Lava rock/Possibly Pool Filter sand. (More for the visual aspect, but I figure it can't hurt to have different stuff in the mix). I mean if it's all inert i'd assume it wouldn't matter.

Worth it getting a Terrarium for pings?

That makes sense. Thanks. I have a good amount of pings coming in. So I will be repotting a lot of the older ones I have into new mineral based media. Im just trying to figure out the best watering method. Everything will be in 4 inch pots now. I figure During non-dormancy: Top watering till the...

Has anyone found a good "Coarse" silica sand?

Im guessing the Turface (I see the MVP brand or w/e mentioned a lot) and the APS are practically the same thing (They seem to look the same).

Worth it getting a Terrarium for pings?

Most people seem to mention top watering for pings? Any particular reason that they prefer this compared to say.....Sundews?

Has anyone found a good "Coarse" silica sand?

I had thought of using this as the "Sand" alternative in my mix. I have a TDS meter coming in so i'll make sure I wash it well. (or do I need to soak it overnight). It'll be used with repotting pings.

    Cultivating Mexican Pinguicula

Thoughts on an equal mix of Turface/#20 Pool filter sand/Perilite/and Peat Moss? (any suggestions of something else to put in?) I know 100% mineral is the way to go, but I feel like even in their natural environment they surely have "some" organic media even if it's very small. Im planning on...

Has anyone found a good "Coarse" silica sand?

Seems like pool filter sand isn't a bad option thats at least somewhat available. I mean really......the only negative to perilite is that it's just sorta a PITA to deal with correct?

Thats a good point, I guess I forget the difference between species. Regardless my humidity seems ok (hovering at around 45 now).
