If the plant that is browning has already flowered then that is normal. After Bromeliads flower the mother plant SLOWLY withers away.
If this is the case, then removing the pups depends on a couple of things, the species of bromelaid and their roots.
The pups you say are a 1' tall...

I tried growing redleyi from spores once and I did pretty well, but I think I put too many spores crowding the culture. I had a couple small plants form but they died shortly after. After a couple months the whole cultures started turning...
Pm'ed everyone, worked out a pair of trades already - I still can trade with like 2 more people :)
