    Please rate my Cacti!

Hi VAT, it looks like the spines on the new growth on both cacti are spaced further apart than those lower on the plant which would usually mean that they are not getting as much light as the were raised in, try boosting the light levels and see how they do, you might have to wait till next year...

    how old is everybody???

I am a Safety Tech. at a high tech industrial plant, it is kind of like being in a small town fire dept., nothing happens for weeks at a time but when it does you had better know what you are doing. We deal with high concentration acids, bases, assorted corrosives, pyrophorics, chronic and...

My new VFT, not sure which one.

Hi Static, the variety you have is registered with the ICPS as "Dentate Traps" but is more commonly known as Dente or Dentate, Dentata is usualy synonymous with the registered variety "Sawtooth" which has a much more finely divided trap margin than your plant.

    White Fuzz, green nodules

Hi RP, when the slime mold/ alge in my VFTs comes up in the middle of some mold fibers the slime mold forms translucent bright green nodules until it breaks free of the mold fibers, that is most likley what you are seeing. It is the same thing that forms the green ooze later in the season.

    smallest ground cover

I have a moss that looks a lot like grass that is about 4mm tall, the problem is that I have no idea where it came from or what kind it is, if you are looking for something to grow around the base of your plants just let them go and the moss will come, most often several kinds, uninvited.

    Bromeliads

Regular potting soil is what I always used and it seemed to work fine, I would go with a bigger pot and new soil to help with any root binding and get rid of all of the commercial chemicals.

    Skin

I did that to mine too, did not cause any problems though, the plant seemed to handle it just fine, but you did not want to get your nose around it!

    How to grow big traps

I would guess that trap size is effected by genetics, soil, feeding and light at least. More food might mean bigger traps until you overdose your plant, or it might not if the traps get bigger in low prey environments. More light means healthier plants but might mean slightly smaller traps...

How do you make peat tea?

Hi Tamlin, interesting post! I wonder however, where Rob mentions that he was worried about bacterial contamination, if you could not cool the concentrait, put it in jars and can it, therby avoiding both bacteria and getting burned while extending shelf life indefinitely.

    Sand.

Sorry Tamlin, but I found a bag of white sand one time that was pure calcite, highly soluble and most likely ok for high pH desert plants but would have droped my CPs dead in their tracks, thankfully I noticed the difference in the physical structure of the grains and checked it before I used...
