Questions about wading pools as water trays

Fred's insight is worth examining further, too. I made display boxes out of dimensional lumber and them lined them with plastic. You know, for aesthetics. Turns out kiddie pools are rather fugly. Making boxes was probably more hassle than you are looking for though. Instead, think like Fred...

    Darlingtonia germination

Fresh cobra plant seed always germinates well for me with no stratification. Even seed around six months of age stored dry in the refrigerator has "popped" well for me. This is with seed from various sources. Usually I see around 90 percent germination. If I had to guess, I imagine the seeds I...

Clever use of old crocks, Jen. Stealing that one!

Fool-proof Adlrovanda culture... in a bucket

All these cool cats speak the truth! Nothing like an entire choir singing hallelujah in the background, right?! Can I get an AMEN?!

Fool-proof Adlrovanda culture... in a bucket

Go for the basement, friend. The strain I have will survive ffreezing, but not all will. I am not sure how much freezing mine will survive, either. Look for cattails or water hyacinth. They are your best bet for a quickly balanced ecology.

    Giveaway Cephalotus seed

Perhaps of note here: I have directly sown my Cephalotus seeds without stratification in the past. These seeds came from JC and germinated well enough to my liking (well above half). Higher germination would have been better, but stratification also makes me antsy. I have done the same with...

    Pots for Sarracenia

My experience with Sarracenia in situ is that their roots are seldom hot, barely warm at most. Even near Charleston in July a few years ago the soil and water around the roots of S. minor and S. flava felt cool to the touch, though not really cold. I'm guessing 80-85 degrees or so...

    Jcals ceph (Cephalotus) seed results.

My turn to show off again, friends. Out of the eight seedlings that shot up from the seed received from Jcal, I had six survivors. I transplanted them from the Turface and peat mix into just peat and lots o' perlite. These little seedlings and my "larger" plants are all planted in the same...

    Some really bad news

I traveled through Grants Pass just days before the incident. I wish I could have stopped to meet Jerry in person. What an awesome grower and plant friend. What a tragedy.

Fool-proof Adlrovanda culture... in a bucket

I think you are correct, Jimbo. Even if not, it is indigenous to sphagnum bogs and undoubtably suitable for this application. I have added some more pertinent information to my initial post. Thanks, Richard!

Fool-proof Adlrovanda culture... in a bucket

Fool-proof Aldrovanda culture... in a bucket DISCLAIMER: not fool-proof. If you are a fool, this might not work. I didn't come up with my Aldrovanda approach. pearldiver (Paul!) did all the leg work on this. If anything I tweaked this setup to make it easier for me and less beneficial for the...

Autographs after the show only, please...

That's what folks on my Facebook and other forums said, too, Mark. The author did an excellent job; she sent the article for me to proofread (#EnglishTeacher) and there wasn't one plant based error on her behalf; there were a couple errors on mine. :p It really came out great, and I was glad...

Autographs after the show only, please...

...because I am that famous. My CPs and I made the front page of our local paper, y'all. http://www.dailystatesman.com/story/2204412.html I tried to push conservation hard.

Mounted Orchids for Trade: Brassocattleya and Encyclia

I have seen some orchid interest in the past here at TF, so I thought I would post up some other surplus plants I have. These are mounted -- one on cork bark the other on persimmon wood -- and are well established. Unfortunately, I was a bit aggressive in moving them to higher light conditions...
