So should I keep it in my little greenhouse in my basement and just use the lights I have them...rather than taking them outside?
Bianchi, I hope I didn't poach them. What's weird, if they did come from the moss I collected, these woods are no where near a bog. The woods are full of oak, ash...
Stow-away
A few weeks ago, my dog and I were hiking through some woods near my house. Near a creek, there was an old rotted tree that had a bunch of moss (possibly sphagnum) growing on it. So I took a small sample of it. I placed it in the same container that I've been trying to nurse a...
I'm glad that you are enjoying the pictures. If anyone is interested in seeing all of the pictures I took that day at Brown's bog, you can go to:

Greetings everyone. A couple of weeks ago, a friend and I went to a nearby bog close to Wooster, Ohio. With my friend being a high school horticulture teacher and me being a high school science teacher, we spent a long time looking closely at the plants.
I'm wondering if someone could...
I use the snow to water my plants. I live in northern Ohio and we've been getting quite a bit of snow...and it sounds like another snow storm is heading right for us (expecting 8-14").
A few words of additional advice when using snow...besides using the yellow or snow close to roads. If you...
I would be interested. I live in Northeast Ohio. I have some experience with neps, but never had a miranda. If you have any available, I'd like to add one to my classroom. Thank you for offering.
This is perhaps a newbie question and I apologize if this is. From reading many of the posts, it seems as though many of you have very good luck with your neps. For me, 40 - 50% of the ones I receive make it. When I get a nep, I typically buy several and get them fairly young...expecting to lose...
Dear Peanuts1gang,
I just posted a question in another thread about ventilating a minigreenhouse. I just noticed in your picture you had a cpu fan. Can I ask how you have it hooked up? Aren't the fan motors DC? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dwight
I just got severl old cpu fans. Can anyone guide me as to how I could hook these up to an outlet. I believe the fan motors are DC...it wouldn't be a good thing to hook it up to AC. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Dwight
I have 2 - 20W grow bulbs (tubes) within the minigreenhouse and positioned about 8" above the neps and 2 - 40W flouresent bulbs on the outside of the greenhouse. Both 20W bulbs are on a timer and are on for 14 - 15 hours a day. The 40W is on for about 6-10hrs a day.
Any advice would be greatly...
Greetings everyone. My wife and I purchased our first home and this past year we've had to clear out some trees. In the coming years, I'd like to put in little pond and bog area in the back of our property. I'm thinking of something along the lines of a natural/Japanese influenced design. We...
Greetings everyone. I have a ventrata that when I first got it, it had some pitchers growing. Then, for a period of time, it seemed to struggle, adjusting to my climate (from Hawaii to Ohio). The growth slowed and it stopped forming its pitchers.
This year, the plant has really taken off. It is...
Greetings everyone. A couple of months ago I purchased a 4-tiered mini greenhouse off of Ebay to keep my CPs healthy over the winter months in my basement. They are simple to build and use. Essentially, it is a shelf with a plastic covering with a zippered door to access the inside. I've placed...
That's what I like to hear. An excuse to buy more droseras. My wife will be thrilled.
Will adding a layer of sand (about 1") affect any of the plants? My initial thought would be "no" since I believe sand is mostly an inert material, but I could be wrong. Any advice?
Thanks,
Dwight
I've been reading up on the fungus gnats. A few of the sites mentioned or removing the top layer of soil and replacing it with clean potting sand for about an inch thick. I have nepenthes, droseras, and purple pitcher plants. Would this work with these plants? I personally would like to stay...
