Keeping kittens from snacking on plants

I make pepper tea and spray it on the plants. They take one taste and decide they’re not all that attractive after all. :-) doesn’t hurt the plants or the cats. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Would parson spiders be caught by venus fly traps?

I had not heard of parson spiders before, cool spider though I probably wouldn’t be much interested in sharing my bed with one... I agree that a flytrap wouldn’t be much use in eradicating spiders...or anything really. There are always more bugs. That said, my flytraps outside used to catch...

    A few exciting hybrids

Oh, this thread! I have a few more to share now. By the way, the “Fake Weser” above was the real ‘Weser.’ It’s been a great parent in hybrids. So here are a few more that have been making me happy just lately. Note - the extra petals on the one, and the hooked (and sometimes forked) nectar...

    A few nice hybrids.

Not only that; but when you make a good cross, there can be so much variation, especially if you have a fertile hybrid and back cross it to one of the parents. The wine red one that’s slightly blurry (Sorry) is a hybrid of laueana x (laueana x moranensis Vera Paz). It’s the darkest of 30 plants...

    A few nice hybrids.

I wish I knew! It was a random seedling that came up on a pumice planter, and it sat as a tiny dormant plant for almost 2 years during a period when things got a bit messed up because of too-warm temperatures. I moved last May into a place with better ventilation and it finally took off. Now I’m...

    Are these Chanterelles?

They look like chanterelles to me. They should have that almost-citrusy chanterelle smell too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Evolution of carnivory as a response to nutrient poor environments

Carnivory is one way but clearly not the only way to adapt. The added nitrogen and trace elements give them an extra edge and help them produce more seed but with certain exceptions, most carnivorous plants can survive without prey. They just do better with it. Other plants, like bog orchids...
